Man Vintners
Stellenbosch, South Africa
MAN began with three friends and an idea: to
make a wine that we ourselves would love to
buy. Good quality, good value, good packaging.
Not exactly an epiphany, but enough to
motivate us into action.
What do we name it? Keeping peace in the
family, we took the first initials of our wives – so this is how we explained to Marie, Anette, and
Nicky that we were going to be "busy" most
weekends. “It’s for you!” we told them. And it's
mostly true.
That's the story the men tell. Actually, the 3 women were good friends long before their husbands
got the idea to make these wines, so it’s an ongoing argument whose idea it was in the first place.
José Conde, Tyrrel Myburgh and Phillip Myburgh began the project back in 2001.
All are involved in the making and the selling of Man Vintners; now the original team is further
supported by Charles Back (of Fairview Wines) as well as dedicated grape growers from the
Perdeberg Hills region in Paarl.
From our first wine in 2001 we have grown to producing over 140,000 cases and exporting to 18
countries (and growing still!).
Our wines are about straightforward value for money. We try to make bold, fruity, palate-pleasing,
modern-styled wines that have a sense of place. We focus on one region: the Perdeberg Hills region of Agter-Paarl. With primarily Malmesbury shale soils that have excellent water-retention ability, our vineyards produce wines that are concentrated and flavourful, with a spicy, mineral character that is typical of the area. Our growers are WIETA accredited, which means that we farm in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible way.

Tyrell Myburgh, Jose Conde and Charles Back.
Tyrrel Myburgh (winemaker, director) is the youngest member of the team and therefore must do most of the work. His philosophy degree comes in very handy when cleaning out the tanks. Tyrell is also the owner and winemaker of Joostenberg Wines.
Jose Conde (director) spent ten years in New York City and 5 in Tokyo only to realize what he really wanted was to live in a small town at the tip of Africa. Jose is also owner and winemaker of Stark-Condé Wines.
Charles Back (director) is the oldest and (self-proclaimed) wisest member of the team. Charles lives in a cave on the hillside of Paarl Mountain with a ferocious band of wild goats. Charles is also owner and cellarmaster of Fairview and Spice Route Wines.
