Man Vintners
Stellenbosch, South Africa
This MAN thing all began with three friends and an idea: to make a wine that they themselves would love to buy. Good quality, good value, good packaging. The name MAN comes from the first initials of the friends wives names Marie, Anette, and Nicky. But MAN is not only about woMAN, it is about MANkind and huMANity as well. Remember, Africa is the cradle of MAN!
Like most men, MAN has expanded a bit over the years. It all started with their first export order to Japan in 2001 and have grown to producing over 75,000 to 100,000 for export to 12 countries. Looking forward to continued expected growth, MAN Vintners were starting to feel the need to bring on an additional partner and perhaps more vineyard resources. During a short informal chat with Charles Back, the owner of Fairview and Spice Route Wines, they realised that they had a lot in common: their passion for the industry, interest in new vineyard areas and like-minded business philosophies. Charles Back is widely considered to be one of the leading visionaries of the South African wine scene. In addition to his long winemaking experience, he brings to MAN a wide network of grape growing contacts in some of South Africa's most exciting areas. The other partners are Jose Conde (Stark-Conde) and Tyrrel Myburg (Joostenburg).
The majority of the grapes are sourced from a group of VITA accredited growers whose farms surround the Perdeberg hills outside of Paarl. The farms cover a fairly large range of area; some have a strong coastal influence while others are much warmer and dry. By and large, though, it can be characterized as a warm, dry, area.
The soils are primarily shale. Most of the vineyards (more than 75%) are un-irrigated and the majority are traditional bush-vines which make for low yields and concentrated fruit.
